Our Role
로렌스 제프리스는 송은문화재단의 장기적인 전략 및 운영 파트너로서 재단의 비전 수립과 프로그램 기획, 대외적 위상 제고를 위해 긴밀히 협력해왔습니다. 양 기관의 파트너십은 2010년부터 지속되어 왔으며, 이를 바탕으로 전시 기획 및 운영 지원은 물론 특별 프로젝트 개발과 국제 협력에 이르기까지 기관의 방향성 수립과 공간 운영 전반을 총괄하고 있습니다.
송은이 한국 동시대 신진 작가를 지원하고 국제적 문화 교류를 증진하고자 하는 취지에 발맞추어, 로렌스 제프리스는 재단 전시 프로그램의 구조적 강화에 중추적인 역할을 수행해왔습니다. 또한 한국 신진 현대미술가를 지원하는 핵심 사업인 ‘송은미술대상’의 지속적인 확장과 발전을 이끌며, 해당 미술상이 단발성 수상에 그치지 않고 작가의 장기적 예술적 성장과 국제적 활동을 지원하는 주요 플랫폼으로 자리매김하도록 기여하였습니다.
나아가 로렌스 제프리스는 2016년부터 2021년까지 스위스 건축사무소 헤르조그 앤 드뫼롱의 국내 첫 실현 프로젝트인 송은 신사옥 및 아트스페이스 건립 과정에서 클라이언트 대표를 역임하였습니다. 로렌스 제프리스는 건축가 및 관련 자문단과의 협업을 총괄하여 송은의 설립 목표가 건축적·운영적 의사결정에 일관되게 반영되도록 조율하였으며, 프로그램 개발 단계부터 장기적 운영 및 실행에 이르는 전 과정을 체계화함으로써 현재까지 이어는 운영 기반을 구축하였습니다.
Laurence Geoffrey’s has been a long-term strategic and operational partner of SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation since 2010, working closely with the institution to shape its vision, programming, and public presence. The practice oversees all aspects of the space, combining curatorial direction with hands-on execution across exhibition planning, logistics, and the development of special projects and international collaborations.
Aligned with SONGEUN’s mission to support emerging Korean contemporary artists while fostering global cultural exchange, Laurence Geoffrey’s has played a central role in strengthening the foundation’s exhibition program. As part of this broader effort, the practice has also played an important role in the continued expansion of the SONGEUN Art Award, a principal initiative supporting emerging Korean contemporary artists. Through this expanded framework, the award has established itself as a key platform for sustained artistic development and long-term visibility.
From 2016 to 2021, Laurence Geoffrey’s additionally served as Client Representative for the development of SONGEUN’s new headquarters and art space in Seoul, designed by Herzog & de Meuron as the firm’s first realized project in Korea. Working closely with the architectural team and associated consultants, the practice helped align institutional objectives with architectural and operational decision-making, ensuring continuity from development through long-term operation and programming.

송은문화재단은 1989년 ST인터내셔널(구 삼탄)의 고(故) 유성연 명예회장이 평생에 걸친 애정과 한국 동시대 신진 작가를 지원하고자하는 확고한 의지와 지속적인 헌신을 바탕으로 설립한 비영리 기관입니다. 재단의 명칭인 송은(松隱)은 설립자의 아호에서 비롯되어 ‘숨어 있는 소나무’라는 의미를 담고있으며, 이는 뿌리를 깊이 내리되 겉으로 드러나지 않는 소나무처럼 중심은 언제나 작가에게 두어야 한다는 철학을 상징합니다. 송은은 작가의 예술 활동에 전념하여 대외적으로 빛을 발할 수 있도록 뒤에서 묵묵히 조력하여 견고한 토대가 되어주고 지속적인 지원구조를 제공하는 역할을 지향합니다.
서울의 주요 문화 및 패션 중심지인 청담동에 위치한 송은은 2021년 현재의 신사옥을 개관하였습니다. 스위스 건축사무소 헤르조그 앤 드 뫼롱이 한국에서 처음으로 선보인 송은 사옥은 전시공간을 함께 품은 비영리 문화 공간으로, 국내외 예술 및 건축계가 주목하는 상징적인 문화적 랜드마크로 자리매김 하였습니다.
SONGEUN Art and Cultural Foundation is a non-profit, non-commercial contemporary art institution established in 1989 by the late Honorary Chairman of ST International, Mr. Sung Yeon Yoo, shaped by his lifelong passion for the arts and a sustained commitment to supporting emerging Korean contemporary artists. Named after his nom de plume, Songeun, which beautifully translates to meaning “hidden pine tree,” the name reflects a philosophy of quiet support. It symbolizes having deep roots but hidden as the focus should be given to the artists, embodying the foundation’s role in standing consistently behind artistic practice while providing an enduring yet discreet framework through which artists are able to take full prominence.
Located in Cheongdam-dong, one of Seoul’s leading fashion and cultural districts, SONGEUN opened its current purpose-built space in 2021. Designed by the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron as their first realized project in Korea, the building has since become a cultural landmark for art, design, and architecture audiences in Korea and abroad.
