Established in 1989 by the late honorary Chairman of ST International (previously SAMTAN), Mr. Sung-Yeon Yoo, the SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation embodies his lifelong passion for art, initially hindered by the hardships of the Korean War that prevented his dream of becoming an artist. Named after Chairman Yoo’s nom de plume, “SongEun”, meaning ‘hidden pine tree,’ the foundation symbolizes his aspiration to serve as a solid, supportive base for emerging Korean contemporary artists. Since 1999, his son Sang-Duck Yoo has guided the family business and foundation, continuing his father’s legacy with initiatives such as the annual SongEun ArtAward established in 2001 and the SongEun ArtCube in 2002. In November 2010, the foundation expanded into a new, purpose-built facility for art exhibitions and events, reflecting Chairman Sang-Duck Yoo’s enduring dedication to arts and culture. This expansion enhances the foundation’s capacity to provide artists with greater opportunities to showcase their work and offers increased public access to the contemporary art scene.
In September 2021, SONGEUN unveiled its new space designed by the renowned Swiss architecture firm, Herzog & de Meuron, their first-ever realized project in Korea. With this, SONGEUN has been positioned as a significant landmark in Seoul with the collective aspiration to both impart and contribute a meaningful influence on Korea’s cultural makeshift by broadening the exposure of Korean artists as well as the contemporary art scene.송은 문화재단은 1989년 고(故) 유성연 ST 인터내셔널(이전 삼탄) 명예 회장에 의해 설립되었습니다. 유성연 명예회장님은 한국전쟁으로 인해 예술가로서의 꿈을 이루지 못한 어려움을 겪었으나, 미술에 대한 끊임없는 열정을 실현하기 위해 송은문화재단을 창립하셨습니다. “송은”이라는 아호를 따서 재단을 설립했습니다. “송은”은 ‘숨겨진 소나무’를 의미하며, 신진 한국 현대 예술가들을 위한 견고하고 지원적인 기반이 되기를 바라는 그의 염원을 상징합니다. 1999년 이후, 유상덕 회장님은 가족 사업과 재단을 이끌어 오며, 2001년에 설립된 송은미술대상과 2002년의 송은 아트큐브 등을 통해 아버지의 유산을 이어가고 있습니다. 2010년 11월, 재단은 예술 전시와 이벤트를 위한 새로운 시설을 확장하여, 문화 예술에 대한 지속적인 헌신을 보여 주었습니다. 이 확장은 예술가들이 자신의 작품을 더 많이 선보일 수 있는 기회를 제공하며, 대중들에게 현대 미술에 대한 접근성을 넓히기 위해 기여하고 있습니다.
2021년 9월, 송은은 스위스 유명 건축 회사 헤르조그 앤 드 뫼롱(Herzog & de Meuron)에 의해 디자인된 새로운 공간을 공개하였습니다. 이는 HdM이 한국에서 처음으로 구현한 프로젝트로서, 송은이 서울의 중요한 랜드마크로 자리매김하여 한국 예술가들과 현대 미술의 노출을 넓히고 문화적 변화에 의미 있는 영향을 미칠 수 있는 공동의 포부를 가지고 있습니다.
The SONGEUN Art Award is one of our most significant initiatives. SONGEUN has been championing young and emerging Korean artists for over two decades since the program’s establishment in 2001. Annually, approximately 20 talented artists under the age of 45 are meticulously selected from a pool of about 500 applicants through an open call selection process for a group exhibition. The sole criterion for participation is the age of the artists, ensuring a platform for promising talents to gain exposure and recognition. The award aims to not only provide financial support but also to confer legitimacy through partnerships with esteemed institutions.
In 2021, in commemoration of its 20th anniversary and the inauguration of a new landmark venue, the SONGEUN Art Award expanded its scope to offer extended benefits to artists. This expansion was made possible through invaluable partnerships with the Seoul Museum of Art Nanji Residency and generous sponsorship from Cartier. The prize package now includes a cash award of KRW 20 million for the Grand Prize winner, the opportunity to present a solo exhibition at SONGEUN within three years, participation in the Nanji Residency program, acquisition of artworks for the permanent collections of SONGEUN and SeMA, and eligibility for a residency program at the Delfina Foundation in London. The selection of the Grand Prize winner is conducted through an on-site evaluation by an external jury committee comprising of distinguished art professionals.
2021년, 송은미술대상은 창립 20주년과 신사옥 개관을 기념하여 범위를 확대하였습니다. 이 확장은 서울시립미술관 난지 레지던시와의 협력을 통해 가능하게 되었으며, Cartier의 후원도 큰 기여를 하였습니다. 상금 2천만 원을 받는 대상 수상자에게는 송은에서 3년 이내에 개인전을 개최할 기회, 난지 레지던시 프로그램 참여, 송은과 서울시립미술관 영구 컬렉션 작품 소장, 그리고 런던 델피나 재단 레지던시 프로그램 참여 자격이 포함됩니다. 대상 수상자는 예술 전문가들로 구성된 외부 심사 위원회의 현장 평가를 통해 선정됩니다.
